The Sacramento Police Department is proud to be a part of the “Live the Dream” Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on January 19, 2009. Sacramento will be celebrating with a community march which begins at two separate locations (south and north) before converging and ending at the Sacramento Convention Center. The Police Department wants to make the public aware of rolling street closures and traffic impacts as a result of the march.

The south area march will depart from the Oak Park Community Center, 3425 Martin Luther King Boulevard, at 8:30 a.m. and travel to a second march meeting point at Sacramento City College, 3835 Freeport Boulevard. Marchers will travel the following route:

south on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
turning west on 12th Avenue and proceeding past Franklin Boulevard
marchers will continue west where 12th Avenue becomes Sutterville Road
and enter the south side of Sacramento City College.

The march will enter the college campus and meet additional marchers assembled to join in at that location. The marchers will then re-organize and continue the following route:

north on Freeport Boulevard to the split at 21st Street
the procession will continue north on 21st Street and then turn west on P Street
then turn north on 10th Street, proceeding to the K Street Mall
the march will continue east on the K Street Mall to the Convention Center on 13th Street.

The north area march is scheduled to leave from Grant High School on Grand Avenue at 9:15 a.m. The marchers will travel the following route:

east on Grand Avenue, to south on Marysville Boulevard until it becomes Del Paso Boulevard
south on Del Paso Boulevard to the south end of Northgate Boulevard
continuing to inbound Highway 160 (which becomes 12th Street).
south on12th Street until turning east on K Street, ending at the Convention Center.

The estimated arrival time for both marches is between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. before they proceed inside the Convention Center for a presentation. The presentation will conclude between 12:00 and 12:30 p.m.

Streets will close as the procession nears intersections, and re-open after the march passes. Upon arriving at any light rail intersections/crossings, the march shall wait and give the right-of-way.
