On Tuesday February 3, 2009 the Sacramento Police Departments Cold Case Homicide unit obtained an arrest warrant on 45 year old Kevin Dunigan for the 1995 murder of Gary Veirs.
On August 29, 1995, at 6:14 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to a stabbing that had just occurred in the 7300 block of Stockdale Street. Gary Veirs was found suffering from stab wounds. Veirs was later pronounced deceased at the UC Davis Medical Center. The suspect was described as a male, black, early 30’s, 5’10”-5’11”.
In September 2006, Cold Case Detective Pat Keller reviewed the homicide case and requested a check for foreign DNA to be examined that was located on the victim. In December of 2008, a match of the foreign DNA resulted in the identification of Kevin Dunigan. Dunigan is believed to have killed Veirs after an argument escalated resulting in Veirs being stabbed.
Kevin Dunigan was on parole in 1995 at the time of the homicide. Dunigan is currently in State Prison for unrelated charges.
