Police Urge Motorists To Slow Down Through Construction Zones

The Sacramento Police Department, in partnership with the City of Sacramento's Departments of Transportation, Utilities, and Parks and Recreation, have increased enforcement in construction work zones.

In July 2004, while flagging traffic at a work site, Tony Pontiliana was struck by a pick-up truck.  He passed away in October 2006, as a result of his injuries.  Since Mr. Pontiliana's accident, the City has expanded its work zone safety training program and adopted stricter standards for traffic control flaggers.

This is the fourth year of the Tony Pontliana Work Zone Safety Awareness Campaign.  As always, the campaign encourages safe driving through work zones.   Officers will specifically look for speeding, unsafe lane changes, and other violations that pose a direct threat to the workers within the construction zone.  The new cell phone usage laws will also be strictly enforced.

During the peak of construction season, as many as 1,000 city and contractor crew members are working on Sacramento streets on any given day.  If your route takes you through a construction zone, please slow down and look for direction from traffic control flaggers.

Please direct any inquiries to Sergeant David Hargadon at (916) 808-6069.
