The Sacramento Police Department will be conducting an enforcement operation aimed at drivers who do not stop at the white lines for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
On Thursday, April 16, 2009, the Traffic POP Team will be performing the first in a series of crosswalk operations. These operations will consist of a plain clothes officer crossing the street, within crosswalks at different intersections within the city. Motorcycle officers and officers in squad cars will be observing the plain clothes officer, looking for vehicles failing to yield the right of way.
In 2008, there were 229 reported vehicle accidents involving pedestrians in the City of Sacramento of which 204 had injuries and 7 resulted in fatalities. The Sacramento Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit receives several complaints each week regarding vehicles not yielding to pedestrians who are lawfully crossing the street.
The goal of these operations is to educate the public and to reduce the number of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.
