Arrest Made in 1980 Homicide Cold Case

On October 21, 1980, at approximately 9:00 p.m., victim Norman Crawford was shot and killed in the area of 8th Avenue and 45th Street (Donner School).  At that time, homicide detectives identified several possible suspects, including Waco Williams.  Despite a lengthy and thorough investigation, investigators were unable to obtain enough evidence at that time to make an arrest.

In 2009, the Sacramento Police Department's Cold Case Unit re-examined the case.  Several pieces of evidence were sent to the Sacramento County Crime Lab for additional forensic testing.  Based on the results of the re-examinations, detectives were able to obtain sufficient evidence to request an arrest warrant be issued for Waco Williams.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, the Sacramento Police Department's Cold Case Unit obtained an arrest warrant for murder and arrested 49-year-old Waco Williams.  He was arrested in Sacramento without incident.  Williams was booked into the Sacramento County Jail.

The victim and suspect knew each other; however, the motive is still unknown.

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or text in a tip by texting to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter SACTIP followed by the tip information.  Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
