On Sunday, August 30, 2009, at 2:09 a.m., officers from the Sacramento Police Department responded to the area of N. 12th Street and Sitka Way regarding a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Officers arrived and located the male victim near the light rail tracks of N. 12th Street. The victim suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sacramento City Fire Department.
The Sacramento Police Department's Major Collision Unit responded and took over the investigation. Investigators believe that the vehicle involved, a blue 2006 Dodge Stratus, was traveling southbound N. 12th Street, at an unknown rate of speed. As the vehicle approached N. B Street, it struck the victim as he was walking across the number one lane. He was thrown onto the light rail tracks as a result of the collision. Regional Transit Light Rail lines were interrupted for a short time as a result of the inbound 12th street closure and investigation.
The driver of the involved vehicle was contacted at the scene. The victim was not walking in a crosswalk and at the time, and investigators don't believe alcohol was a factor in this collision.
The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this collision to call Detective Anderson at 808-3776.
