The Sacramento Citizen's Crime Alert Program encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime. Crime Alert provides a telephone number and Web Tips to encourage people to submit crime information. Callers can remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward if the information given leads to an arrest or grand jury indictment of a felony offender. The Crime Alert program is a non-profit organization that is solely funded by private donations and fund-raising.
Recently, several high-profile cases have yielded cash rewards to tipsters. Below is a short synopsis of three such cases.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2009, two separate thefts were reported that occurred at a local cemetery. Stolen was a tractor worth $25,000 and utility trailer worth $1,000. On, Tuesday, August 11, 2009, information about the theft was given to local media. On Wednesday, August 12, 2009, the Crime Alert Program received a tip. The information was passed along to detectives and on Wednesday, August 19, 2009, detectives obtained search warrants and ultimately made three arrests. Both the tractor and trailer were recovered.
On Monday, June 29, 2009, Crime Alert featured a wanted sex offender for failure to register and for violating his parole. On Thursday, August 27, 2009, a tipster e-mailed a tip giving information on the suspect's whereabouts. The tip was forwarded to detectives and within hours, they located and arrested the suspect.
On Tuesday, August 25, 2009, Crime Alert received an unsolicited tip about a suspect wanted for arson. The tip was forwarded to Sacramento Fire Department Investigators. The suspect was located and arrested the following day.
These are just a few examples of cases in which information provided by concerned citizens led to the apprehension of wanted criminals and a cash reward was given for the tipsters!
