The Sacramento Police Department is investigating injuries to a 3-year-old child which has left him at the hospital in critical condition.
On March 23, 2010, at 6:43 p.m., the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the 2700 block of 32nd Street on a child who had been hurt. The Fire Department transported the child to U.C. Davis Medical Center. The 3-year-old child had injuries to his head and bruising on his body. Due to these injuries, hospital staff contacted the Police Department.
Due to the suspicious nature of the child's injuries, Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives determined that earlier in the day the 3-year-old child was physically disciplined by both the father and step-mother. Later in the day, the father left the house. In the evening, the child went to the bathroom and the step-mother heard a noise. The step-mother went to go check on the child finding him unconscious. The child was carried over to a neighbor's apartment where 9-1-1 was called to have medical personnel respond.
Detectives believe that the injuries the child sustained were a direct result of the assault by the step-mother and father. Detectives are still conducting their investigation, however it is anticipated that the step-mother and father will be booked into Sacramento County Jail for child abuse later this morning.
Because the investigation is ongoing some of the specific details are not being disclosed at this time.
