On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, a Sacramento Police Department Motor Officer was working traffic enforcement in the area of 44^th Street and Broadway.  At 9:01 a.m., the officer initiated a traffic stop on the driver of a silver Ford SUV for a seatbelt violation.  The driver pulled over and got out of the car.  He was angry and confrontational with the officer.  He then got back into his vehicle and drove away.  The officer initiated a pursuit of the fleeing vehicle.  Other officers responded to assist.

The pursuit led the officer to the 3500 block of 44^th street where the suspect pulled into a driveway and ran into a house, closing the door behind him.  A second officer arrived to the location to assist.  Both officers went to the front door of the residence and knocked.  A female opened the door.  The officers saw the suspect inside the residence and entered to apprehend him.  The suspect immediately resisted and began to violently fight with the officers.  The suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the officers in the left thigh.  A Conducted Energy Device (Taser) was deployed in an effort to control the suspect; however, it had no effect.  A third officer arrived to assist and a Conducted Energy Device (Taser) was deployed a second time.  The suspect was eventually overpowered and taken into custody.  The weapon was described as a large kitchen knife and it was recovered by officers at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 61-year-old Ervin Brown.  He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and for evading.

The injured officer is 31-year-old Thomas (TJ) Price.  Officer Price has been a police officer for five years.  He is currently assigned to the Traffic Unit as a Motor Officer.  His injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.  He was treated at a local hospital and later released.

Traffic stops are inherently dangerous for police officers and are among the most dangerous activities officers engage in.  Officers generally have very little or no information about the person they are stopping, and sometimes that person may be very violent. This is just another example of that.
