On Monday, May 17, 2010, at 3:20 p.m., officers responded to the 3100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard regarding a report of a man brandishing a crossbow and threatening to shoot the complainant.  Responding officers did not locate the man involved and took a brandishing and threats report.  Shortly after 6:00 p.m., a call came in indicating that the subject involved in the earlier call had returned and was present at the location.

Officers responded and located the suspect inside a detached garage.  The suspect was immediately confrontational with officers.  He brandished the crossbow and a sledge hammer at the officers in a threatening manner.  Officers deployed a Conducted Energy Device (Taser) which had no effect on him.  The suspect then grabbed a nail gun and fired it at the officers.  Fearing for their safety, two of the officers on-scene drew their duty weapon and fired at the suspect.

The suspect retreated back into the garage and barricaded himself.  The suspect did not respond to verbal commands by officers to come out of the garage.  At that point, it was unknown if the suspect had been shot by the officers.  The SWAT team and negotiators responded to assist with the barricaded suspect.

A perimeter was established and surrounding residences were evacuated.  Negotiators attempted to make verbal contact with the suspect with negative results.  SWAT officers deployed a pole camera and located the suspect lying on the ground with one hand underneath his body.  Officers directed the suspect to show his hands, however, he did not comply.  Fearing that he may have a weapon, a K-9 was deployed.  The K-9 bit the suspect forcing him to reveal his hand which enabled officers to safely take him into custody.

The suspect suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.  He was conscious, alert and talking when contacted by officers.  He was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.  His name is being withheld at this time pending further investigation.  He is only being identified as a 32-year-old Fijian man.

No officers were injured during this incident.  As a matter of policy, the two officer involved (both three year veterans of the Sacramento Police Department) will be placed on paid administrative leave.  In accordance the Sacramento Police Department's policy and procedures, the Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Unit, Professional Standards Unit, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, the City of Sacramento's Office of Public Safety Accountability, and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
