The Sacramento Police Department will be conducting an undercover crosswalk operation aimed at drivers who do not stop at the white lines for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
On Thursday, September 9, 2010, the Traffic Officers will be conducting crosswalk operations at various locations throughout the city. The operations consist of a plain- clothed officer crossing the street within a crosswalk. Motorcycle officers and officers in squad cars will be observing the plain-clothed officer, looking for vehicles failing to yield the right of way.
In 2009, there were 182 reported vehicle accidents involving pedestrians, in the City of Sacramento, of which 168 had injuries and 8 resulted in fatalities.
The goal of these operations is to educate the public and to reduce the number of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.
