The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.
Last evening, officers responded to an assault where the suspect held a knife to the throat of a 17-year-old male. The victim was not hurt and the suspect escaped. He was described as a male White 40-60 years old, with tattoos on his neck. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt or jacket and dark pants.
This morning, at 10:01 a.m., officers observed a male with tattoos on his neck, wearing a grey sweatshirt and dark pants, walking south on Truxel Road. The suspect appeared to be armed with a knife and was contacted by five officers near the corner of Truxel Road and Terracina Drive. He was ordered repeatedly to drop the weapon but refused. The suspect repeatedly stated that he was not going back to prison and was not going to drop the weapon. An officer deployed the conducted energy device, also known as a Taser, which was ineffective. The suspect, still armed with the weapon, charged at the officers. Officers were in fear for their safety and each of them fired their duty weapons.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Investigators determined that the object held by the suspect was an improvised stabbing device. Based on the investigation thus far, it is believed that the deceased is the same suspect involved in the assault from last night.
Police have identified the suspect as a 42-year-old male White. However, release of his identity is pending notification of next of kin. Once the suspect was identified, it was determined that he had an outstanding warrant for a $1,000,000 for assault with a knife.
Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The officers involved in the shooting have the following tenure with the Sacramento Police Department: 1, 1, 4, 6 and 28 years of service. The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working on this investigation in conjunction with the City's Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
