The Sacramento Police Department has arrested Gregory Samuel Olguin for the murder of 52-year-old Richard Schultz.
On June 1, 1987, at 9:39 p.m., officers responded to a call at 21st Street and K Street regarding a subject lying in blood. Officers arrived on scene and found Sacramento Fire Department personnel treating a male White adult. Officers determined that the victim had been stabbed in the chest. As officers searched the surrounding area, they observed a trail of blood leading from where the victim was found to the alley near 21st Street and K Street. Officers followed the trail of blood to a carport area at the rear of the 2100 block of J Street. There, officers found another male White adult, later identified as victim Richard Schultz, also lying in blood. Victim Schultz had several stab wounds to the chest and was deceased.
The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigations Unit responded to the scene. Detectives determined that both of the victims and a third unknown subject had been drinking beers in the carport just prior to the stabbing. For unknown reasons, victim Schultz and the suspect became involved in an altercation, which lead to the suspect stabbing both victims. The suspect ran off prior to police arrival. The case remained unsolved.
In February, 2009, Homicide Cold Case Detectives reviewed the report looking for possible sources of the unknown suspect's DNA. After review of the report, they submitted evidence collected at the scene in 1987 to the Sacramento County Crime Lab. The lab was able to obtain DNA and as a result they developed a DNA profile of an unknown male.
In April, 2011, the profile was uploaded into the Department of Justice CODIS database. Shortly after entering the profile, the Sacramento Police Department was notified that there was a DNA match. The DNA match was identified to be Gregory Samuel Olguin, a male Hispanic 48. Olguin's physical description matched that of the stabbing suspect back in 1987.
In May, 2011, detectives submitted the case to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office for a murder warrant against Gregory Olguin. The warrant was issued.
On Friday, May 6, 2011, at 8:15 a.m., officers arrested Olguin in the 9100 block of Elk Grove Boulevard. Olguin was later booked and charged with murder.
