The Sacramento Police Department will be able to retain 35 officers thanks to the Department of Justice's Office of Community Policing Services.
Faced with layoffs, the Sacramento Police Department requested a grant exemption to save jobs. The Office of Community Policing Services, led by Bernard Melekian, approved the grant exemption, saving 35 officers to help serve our community.
"This grant exemption is a positive in an otherwise difficult budget year. We are thankful for the quick approval of this grant exemption, which would not have been possible without the efforts of Bernard Melekian from the Department of Justice, the support of Congresswoman Doris Matsui, and the hard work of our police staff" said Chief Rick Braziel.
With the officers being saved, we will be able to retain core downtown patrol services and the traffic teams. Despite this positive news, the Sacramento Police Department will still face 114 layoffs
