The Sacramento Police Department has arrested Ka Yang for the murder of her 6-week-old daughter, Mirabelle Thao-Lo.
On March 17, 2011, at 2:19 p.m., officers responded to the 800 block of Rood Avenue regarding the death of a baby girl. Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators also responded to the scene and an investigation ensued on the suspicious death.
The three month investigation revealed that the child sustained extensive thermal injuries which resulted in her death. The unique nature of these injuries required in-depth medical analysis to determine how the burns occurred. Detectives consulted with several medical professionals, forensic specialists, and government agencies. The injuries that Mirabelle Thao-Lo suffered are consistent with those documented in only three other cases from Dayton, Ohio; New Kent County, Virginia; and Galveston, Texas. Each of these cases were reviewed and researched. Based on that research and the autopsy results, detectives believe the injuries occurred as a result of the child being burned in a microwave oven. Detectives further believe that the child's mother, Ka Yang, committed this crime.
On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at 9:19 a.m., officers responded to the 800 block of Rood Avenue and arrested 29-year-old Ka Yang without incident. She was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and charged with homicide.
