The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.
This afternoon, at 12:38 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2900 block of Silk Court where the suspect had attacked several people. Once on scene, residents told officers the suspect was still inside. Officers entered the home and attempted to make contact with the suspect. Without warning, the suspect emerged from a bedroom wielding a knife while advancing at the officers. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect continued to move towards the officers with the knife still in his hand. An officer deployed their conductive energy device, also known as a Taser, which was ineffective. Due to the fact that the suspect was still armed with a knife and approaching them, one officer shot the suspect striking him in the upper body. The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
Police have identified the suspect as a 20-year-old male White. However, release of his identity is pending notification of next of kin.
As is standard in all officer involved shootings and per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer is a 16 year veteran with the Sacramento Police Department. The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working on this investigation in conjunction with the City's Office of Public Safety Accountability.
