Man with Baseball Bat Attacks Officer

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.

On September 6, 2011, at 3:31 p.m. officers responded to a call regarding a male subject walking down the street breaking windows with a baseball bat. The first responding officer located the subject on 24th Street and Barnett Avenue. The officer immediately directed the subject to drop the bat on the ground however he refused to acknowledge the officer and continued to walk northbound on 24th Street towards Broadway.  The officer paralleled the subject on foot continually directing him to drop the baseball bat.  The subject suddenly stopped and faced the officer, cocked the baseball bat as if he were going to swing it and advanced on the officer.  The officer fearing for his personal safety fired his handgun at the subject striking him in the upper body.  The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Police have identified the subject as a 32-year-old male White.  However, the release of his identity is pending notification of next of kin.

Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave.  He has been with the Sacramento Police Department for 8 years. The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working on this investigation in conjunction with the City's Office of Public Safety Accountability.
