Suspect Uses Vehicle to Assault Deputies

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.

On January 8, 2012 at approximately 1:30 a.m., a California Highway Patrol Sergeant attempted to stop a vehicle for erratic driving in the area of Howe Avenue and Delma Way.  The driver, Bill Stevens, 51-years-old failed to yield, resulting in a vehicle pursuit.  Deputies from the Sacramento Sheriff's Department and County Parks also assisted.

During the chase, The Pursuit Immobilization Technique was executed by CHP, which temporarily disabled the suspect's vehicle.  At the same time, the Sergeant's patrol car veered off the road and struck a tree.  He sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

Deputies surrounded the suspect in attempt to take him into custody.  As they approached, Stevens accelerated towards the Deputies.  Fearing for their lives, four Deputies from the Sacramento Sheriff's Department fired multiple rounds at the suspect as they jumped out of the path of the oncoming vehicle.

The suspect continued to drive several blocks before his car finally stalled. Deputies again attempted to take the suspect into custody but Stevens refused to comply.  A Taser was deployed and he was eventually subdued.  Stevens sustained non lethal gunshot wounds and was transported to an area hospital.

Due to the shooting occurring within the City, members from the Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Division and Crime Scene Unit are leading the investigation. The names of the involved Deputies are not being released at this time.

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES).
