On January 28, 2012, at 4:10 p.m., both police and medical personnel responded to the area of 26th Avenue and 25th Street, regarding a traffic collision between a Regional Transit light rail train and a sports utility vehicle.
Based on video and physical evidence, it was determined that the driver of the SUV drove eastbound 26th Avenue around the crossing arms. A southbound light rail train collided with the SUV killing three of the four passengers.
There were approximately 50 passengers on the train at the time of the collision. Seventeen were examined by medical personnel at the scene. Six were transported to an area hospital with various extents of injuries.
Those killed in the SUV have been identified as a male, 62-years-old, a female, 25-years-old, and a male infant, 21 months. The fourth passenger, a female adult, was transported to an area hospital and was last listed in stable condition.
