The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.
This morning, just before 2:51 a.m., Sacramento Police Officers observed a stolen vehicle at the gas station at Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road. The vehicle was unoccupied and officers were checking the area for possible suspect(s).
A Sacramento Sheriff's Deputy, who was in the area assisting in the search, observed a suspect walking across a dark parking lot just north of the gas station, at Stockton Boulevard and Lawrence Drive. When the deputy attempted to contact the suspect, he fled on foot and the deputy pursued him.
The suspect was non-compliant with the deputy's requests and the deputy deployed his conducted energy device, also known as a Taser, which was ineffective. When the deputy grabbed him, the suspect reached into his waistband. Believing that the suspect was grabbing a weapon, the deputy feared for his life and fired his duty weapon.
The Sacramento Fire Department responded and transported the suspect to the hospital. However, the suspect did not survive his injuries.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Police have identified the suspect as Lamont Harmon, 47-years-old.
The Sacramento Sheriff's Department is conducting an administrative investigation. In accordance with Sheriff's Department policies and procedures, the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The deputy involved in the shooting has been with the Sacramento Sheriff's Department for 10 years. The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide and Crime Scene Investigations Units are conducting the shooting investigation.
