The Sacramento Police Department is seeking the community's help in identifying a John Doe, from thirty-two years ago.
On January 17, 1980, at 9:15 p.m., officers responded to an anonymous call indicating an injured person was at 6th and X Streets. Officers located the victim (John Doe) sitting on the bleachers at the softball diamonds near the location. The victim had died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body.
The victim was never identified. He was in his 20s at the time of his murder and described as a male White or Hispanic, 5'9", 147 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, moustache and a goatee. He was found wearing a light blue denim cap with a short bill, a "LeChevron Collection" jacket, a long sleeve navy blue "Sigallo" sweater with a grey collar, blue jeans, and blue Adidas tennis shoes with a gold stripe.
John Doe had several stretch marks, indicating that he may have been obese at one point and lost a significant amount of weight. It appeared as though he had recently completed dental work, possibly the week prior to his death. He had a partial denture plate on his front upper incisors and his upper four front teeth were false. He had also had his appendix removed.
John Doe appears to have been a smoker, as he was found with a pack of Salem cigarettes and a lighter on the seat beside him. Also, in front of him, a Burger King cup was found. The employees of the Burger King located inside the Greyhound Bus Station, which at the time was at 7th and L Streets remembered selling him the cup at approximately 8:00 on the night he died. A witness stated that the victim had recently moved to the Sacramento area from Los Angeles.
Several items of evidence have been submitted to the local crime laboratory and to the national database for DNA examination. However, the victim remains unidentified. Investigators are hoping that someone will remember the incident, recognize the attached composite drawings, or remember his medical treatments and be able to come forward with his identity.
