The Sacramento Police Department is offering a free driver safety education class targeting new and future licensed teenage drivers.

On May 30, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department will be offering a free driver safety education class held at the Central Command Station located at 300 Richards Boulevard.  Start Smart is targeted for teens between the ages of 15-19 and their parents or guardians.

Did you know that teenage drivers are found at fault in 66% of all fatal collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 4% of the state's licensed drivers?  Additionally, the leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle accidents.

Getting a driver license opens a new world to young drivers. Suddenly, the possibility of new destinations and experiences with friends are within grasp. But a new driver lacks the experience that is sometimes needed on the road. Situations can appear in a second, sometimes too fast for a new driver to take appropriate action. However, there are ways to avoid dangerous situations and to keep a new driver and their passengers safe on the road.

We will focus some of our discussions on the summer months and reinforce tips for parents and guardians to keep their new drivers safe during the upcoming holidays and graduation.
