The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting.
On July 7, 2012, at 6:35 p.m., a two officer patrol unit contacted two suspicious subjects walking in the area of Teekay Way and Dixie Lou Street. During their initial contact, an officer saw the butt end of a rifle protruding upward, underneath one of the subject's sweatshirt. As that officer attempted to detain the armed subject, the gunmen grabbed the rifle and a struggle ensued. The officer was able to momentarily separate himself from the subject. At that time, his partner fired his duty weapon at the armed subject, striking him multiple times in the upper body. Medics arrived and pronounced the subject deceased on scene.
Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. He has been with the Sacramento Police Department for 3 years. The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working on this investigation in conjunction with the City's Office of Public Safety Accountability.
