On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at approximately 8:44 p.m., officers responded to an area hospital regarding a report of child abuse. When officers arrived they were advised by medical personnel that the five month old child's injuries were suspicious in nature and indicative of possible abuse by physical trauma.
Officers were advised that prior to the child being transported to the hospital his mother was at work and the child was being cared for by an uncle. When the mother returned home from work her son appeared to be napping so she let him sleep. After some time had passed the mother checked on her child and discovered he was unresponsive and in need of medical attention. She immediately called 911 and the child was transported to the hospital by medical personnel. Once at the hospital police were notified and responded.
Due to the suspicious nature of the injuries, Homicide detectives, along with Crime Scene Investigators were called out to assist in the investigation. Based on the medical examination and treatment, a previous report of possible neglect/abuse, and statements obtained during the investigation, Homicide detectives determined that the child’s uncle, Wendell Taghap–36, was responsible for injuring the child. Taghap was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on November 1, 2012, for cruelty to a child under circumstances likely to produce great bodily harm or death.
The child remains at an area hospital and is in critical condition.
