On Monday, December 24, 2012, Sacramento City Manager John Shirey announced that with the pending retirement of Chief Rick Braziel, Deputy Chief Dan Schiele has been appointed as the acting Chief of Police for the Sacramento Police Department effective December 29, 2012. Deputy Chief Schiele will continue as the acting chief until appointment of the newly selected chief has been made.
"I am pleased to have Dan as our acting chief, Dan has been a valued member of the Sacramento Police Department for 31 years and I have complete confidence in his ability to keep the Department moving forward while the city selects its new Police Chief, " said City Manager John Shirey.
Deputy Chief Schiele is a second generation Sacramento Police Officer and has held a wide variety of assignments. Prior to his assignment as Deputy Chief in the Office of Investigations he spent five years as the commander of the Joseph E. Rooney Police Facility.
Deputy Chief Schiele has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Management and has attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and California Peace Officer Standards and Training Command College.
Deputy Chief Schiele has not applied for the permanent position of Police Chief.
