On Sunday, January 20, 2013, at approximately 3:31 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to a call of a subject shot. The caller told dispatch that her husband was in an argument with a suspect in their yard and her husband had just shot the suspect.
Officers arrived at the 3100 block of Palmer Street, contacted the 36-year-old armed resident and the subject that had a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The 50-year-old male suspect was quickly transported to an area hospital. Approximately eight hours later the suspect succumbed to his injuries.
Officers found that the resident and his wife were getting ready to pull their vehicle out of the driveway. The resident was at the end of his driveway unlocking the gate to their property when an unknown subject walked up onto their driveway and was acting irrationally. The resident told him to leave, but the suspect made comments about getting into their car. The suspect began arguing with the resident. The wife, seated inside their car, witnessed this argument, was frightened and locked the doors to the vehicle.
The suspect walked up through the gate onto the property all the while the resident was ordering him to leave. The suspect ultimately left the property and walked across the street.
The couple still planned on leaving. The husband went to finish opening the gate when the suspect, with a cane in hand, abruptly turned, began to unclothe as if to fight and aggressively came toward the resident again. The resident retreated back to his yard and the suspect followed. The victim armed himself with a two by four that was on the ground. The suspect became violent, breaking objects in the side yard and swinging his cane violently. The suspect was assaultive and threw large and dangerous objects at the victim.
The resident ran into his home and retrieved a gun and came out ordering the violent suspect to leave. The suspect was still aggressive and throwing objects at the victim. It was when the suspect grabbed a heavy wrought iron stand and was motioning to throw it at the resident, that the resident fired a round striking the subject.
Homicide investigators and CSI responded to the scene to investigate. No arrests have been made pertaining to the shooting. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office is assisting in the investigation. No further information is available at this time.
