The Sacramento Police Department has arrested 29-year-old David Acuna for the murder of Patrick Kendrick.
On Friday, February 1, 2013, at approximately 9:44 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Norwood Avenue regarding a deceased subject located inside of a burning residence. Firefighters had first arrived at the scene and found the apartment fully engulfed in flames. During their efforts to extinguish the flames, they discovered Kendrick deceased inside the home and immediately called police.
Responding officers quickly determined this incident was a possible homicide due to the obvious signs of trauma to the victim's upper body. Detectives also responded and believed the fire was intentionally set by someone other than the victim, and a thorough investigation ensued.
Detectives learned that Suspect Acuna and the victim were known to each other and had been involved in an argument just prior to the incident. Acuna is believed to have stabbed the victim and set fire to his residence. After the fire was set, it is believed that Acuna fled from the scene in a white vehicle and his whereabouts were unknown.
On Tuesday, February 5, 2013, Detectives located the 4-door Honda Civic they believed had been observed by witnesses leaving the scene. The vehicle was located parked in the north area of Sacramento, and detectives continued their search for Acuna.
This morning, February 6, 2013, at approximately 8:00 a.m., officers located and arrested David Acuna in connection with the homicide of 32-year-old Patrick Kendrick. Acuna was taken into custody without incident inside of his apartment in the 1400 block of Brewerton Drive. Acuna was found to be in need of immediate medical attention due to severe burns on his upper body, believed to have been sustained during the February 1, 2013 incident. Officers also located Acuna's girlfriend, Guadalupe Cabrera, 30, who is believed to have been involved in the incident. Cabrera was taken into custody for accessory to murder and arson to an inhabited structure.
Acuna is currently being treated at a local hospital for his injuries; therefore, a booking photograph is unavailable at this time. Cabrera's booking photograph will be released when available.
