Saturday evening, June 1, 2013, The Sacramento Police Department was recognized as the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) California Law Enforcement Agency of the Year for 2012.  This award was based on Driving Under the Influence (DUI) enforcement and training, overall prevention efforts, and for the number of organized DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols it conducted in 2012. 

The Sacramento Police Department DUI Enforcement Team is committed to assisting and training other departments in the region.  The department's relationship with MADD's California State Office is extremely strong and has led the department in innovative and creative public relations efforts.

The Sacramento Police Department was also the winner of the 2012 Law Enforcement Race for the Mission in Sacramento, in which the department raised over $5,000 for MADD programs and services.  During the event, the Sacramento Police Department displayed its emergency Bearcat SWAT vehicle and the Mobile Incident Command vehicle which provided attendees the opportunity to talk with officers and learn more about the department.

The Sacramento Police Department has made great strides in reducing impaired driving in the city and those efforts have certainly saved lives and enhanced the quality of life for all of Sacramento and its visitors.

Two officers were also awarded for their individual achievements: Officer Keri Wilson and Officer William Connor

Officer Wilson is a member of the Office of Traffic Safety funded DUI Enforcement Team.  On top of leading the department with 203 impaired driver arrests, Officer Wilson helped train 73 officers in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and organized a DUI checkpoint dedicated to local victims and victim survivors. In her spare time, Officer Wilson donated many hours to Kops-N-Kids and spearheaded fundraising for our local Walk Like MADD, raising over $5,000.

Working the graveyard and swing shifts, Officer Connor led the patrol division with 116 DUI arrests.  He is also a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and many of his arrests were for drug impairment. Officer Conner's impaired driving enforcement activity is an inspiration to other Officers.
