Officer Involved Shooting – Detectives Encounter and Arrest an Armed Subject

Sacramento Police Detectives were investigating a recent shooting homicide when they were confronted with an armed subject believed to be related to the investigation.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., two homicide detectives were in the Elder Creek area in attempt to contact the homicide suspect when they spotted two subjects; one of whom was pushing a baby stroller with a small child inside, the other subject they immediately identified as being involved in the homicide, walking in the 7500 block of Elder Creek Rd.  The detectives, dressed in plain clothes, with their badges, police radios and handguns exposed and visible on their belts, loudly identified themselves as police officers and commanded the subjects to stop.  The subject pushing the baby stroller immediately stopped and complied with the detective’s commands, the homicide suspect attempted to flee.

The detectives gave chase and quickly caught up to the subject and attempted to physically subdue him.  A struggle ensued at which time the detectives saw that the subject was armed with a handgun.  Fearing for their safety and the safety of the public, two detectives discharged their handguns at the subject striking him at least one time.

Medical assistance was immediately summoned for the injured subject and he was transported to an area hospital.  At this time the subject’s injuries appear to be non-life threatening.   One involved detective received minor abrasions during the incident that did not require medical treatment at the hospital.

The identity of the subject is being withheld due to the ongoing homicide investigation.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide, Internal Affairs and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working this investigation in conjunction with the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
