With summer coming to an end and the school year upon us, the Sacramento Police Department, Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD), and other area schools want to remind drivers and pedestrians to be cautious.
As students are returning to school, the Sacramento Police Department is cautioning drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to obey traffic laws and follow common sense safety guidelines around campuses. Distracted driving such as texting or talking on the phone is not only illegal, but especially dangerous around schools, where hundreds of students may be on foot.
"It is easy to get complacent, drive a little too fast, or get distracted by our phones and not think of the consequences of our actions. Let’s challenge ourselves to be diligent and aware of our surroundings while driving, and work together to make our city safe for the kids getting to and from school every day," said Chief Sam Somers. Due to area schools expecting increased congestion around campuses, the Sacramento Police Department is urging the community to remember the following safety tips:
