Sacramento Police Department Receives $1.25 Million in Federal Grants to Fund Ten Officer Positions

September 17, 2013, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) announced $1.25 million in federal funding for the Sacramento Police Department. This grant will enable the hiring of ten police officers to protect and serve the City of Sacramento and is the largest award possible. The program provides salaries and benefits for officer hires for three years.

“I am pleased that the Sacramento Police Department has received the largest possible federal COPS grant, allowing the department to hire for ten new positions,” said Congresswoman Matsui.  “This federal funding will fill vacant officer positions and help the Sacramento Police Department in its mission to keep our community safe.  This is wonderful news for the Sacramento Police Department and for the entire city.”

The federal grants are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program through Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 funding.  The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire, re-hire, or retain police officers dedicated to addressing specific crime and disorder challenges confronting communities.

“The Sacramento Police Department focuses relentlessly on reducing crime throughout the city.  This much needed COPS grant enables the Department to continue these efforts,” said Sacramento Chief of Police Sam Somers Jr.  “This federal funding benefits every neighborhood and will make our city safer.  Thank you to Congresswoman Matsui for her continued leadership and support in making Sacramento a safer community.”
