The Sacramento Police Department has started the first phase of taking wireless 911 calls.
Starting today, September 18, 2013, we began taking wireless 911 calls in a limited area of South Natomas. In this limited area, the calls will be routed directly to the Sacramento Police Department Communications Center. All other wireless 911 calls in the City of Sacramento continue to be routed through the California Highway Patrol Communication Center before being transferred to a police dispatcher.
The goal is to improve 911 answer times and ultimately decrease emergency service response times for wireless callers. Eventually, Sacramento Police Dispatchers will take all cellular 911 calls within the City, saving valuable time; time that can be critical in an emergency situation.
The community voted for Measure U which provided funding that allowed implementation for the first phase of our wireless deployment plan. This is another step in pursuit of making Sacramento California's safest big city.
