In June of this year the Sacramento Police Department established a partnership with the social media company Nextdoor. Nextdoor is a private social media platform that neighbors can use to communicate amongst each other and directly with the Sacramento Police Department staff that are assigned to their neighborhood. When we formed the partnership with Nextdoor our goal was to connect 10,000 Sacramento neighbors by June of 2014.
We are very pleased to announce that after only six months we have surpassed our goal of connecting 10,000 neighbors! Over 85 percent of Sacramento neighborhoods are now represented on Nextdoor and our neighborhood watch groups have increased over 300 percent. And this is just the beginning!
As Nextdoor in Sacramento has grown it has allowed for literally thousands of neighbors to connect online and to join neighborhood watch programs. Neighbors that know each other and communicate with each other tend to watch out for one another which creates safer neighborhoods. This partnership also enables the Police Department to communicate directly with neighbors and to share crime and safety information in specific geographic areas as opposed to sending out information citywide.
While we have seen tremendous growth in just six short months we have no plans to slow down! Our staff is still actively reaching out to neighborhoods to provide free trainings on Nextdoor.com as well as Neighborhood Watch.
The partnership between the Sacramento Police Department and Nextdoor is a significant step towards Making Sacramento the Safest Big City in California.
