Sacramento, Ca - The Sacramento Police Department, in partnership with Councilmember Steve Hansen and the City of Sacramento, has launched a free online bicycle registry called Ride On!
Ride On! is the product of a collaborative effort to help deter bicycle theft. The bicycle registry will allow anyone to go to http://rideon.sacpd.org and easily register his or her bicycle. The information will be entered into the police department’s internal database, which officers will be able to use to determine the owner of a recovered bicycle.
“By registering your bicycle you increase the chances of getting it back in the event it is stolen. I encourage everyone who owns a bike to take advantage of the registration process.” Captain Bill Champion of the Sacramento Police Department stated.
The bicycle registry is part of a larger bicycle theft prevention public education campaign to "Register. Lock. Report." It is a three-step process designed to reduce bicycle theft. “People want to feel safe riding their bikes,” said Councilmember Hansen. “Sacramento can be the most bike-friendly city in America. This program is a good way to start.”
Councilmember Hansen is working with the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) on the public education component of the campaign to be rolled out in the coming months. Jim Brown, who is the Executive Director of SABA, explained the importance to proper locking habits, “There are three rules to follow to decrease the chances of getting your bike stolen: locking has to become a habit, there are right (and wrong) ways to lock a bike, and knowing which styles of bike locks protect bikes the most effectively”
