Today, February 21, 2014, The Sacramento Police Department was honored to join the students, staff and parents of Caleb Greenwood Elementary School during today’s bike rodeo and fitness day!
Today’s event brought awareness to pedestrian and bicycle safety around schools. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Funding from the grant also provided helmets to forty students that otherwise did not have one to wear.
Members of the Sacramento Police Activities League, Bike Officers from the Sacramento Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, and the fitness coordinator for the Sacramento Police Department were among those who assisted with the event.
Over four hundred students rotated through eight separate stages consisting of various fitness and bicycle courses. The children, ages 5 through 12, received instruction on proper fitting of helmets prior to showing off their skills with events such as: a slow race, obstacle course, rules-of-the-road ride, and a paper route challenge.
Education of our youth is one of the greatest investments in the future of Sacramento; to that end, ensuring their safety when negotiating traffic around schools or travelling to and from home is essential.
