On Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 5:30 p.m., officers from the Sacramento Police Department, Sacramento County Probation Department and the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect that was wanted on several felony charges including; sex acts on a child, unlawful sexual intercourse and possession of obscene matter depicting a person under fourteen. The suspect, 28-year-old William Herzog, was located, sitting in his vehicle with a female passenger in a parking lot near 65th St and 4th Avenue. The responding officers immediately confirmed Herzog’s identity and positioned themselves and their patrol vehicles to take him into custody.
As the team of officers began to give verbal commands to Herzog to exit his vehicle he accelerated his engine and drove at the officers nearly striking one of the Sacramento Police Officers. A second officer from the Sacramento Police Department and a Deputy from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department feared for their safety and the safety of the other officers on scene, and fired their duty weapons at Herzog, striking him multiple times before Herzog crashed into one of their marked patrol cars.
Herzog was transported by the Sacramento Fire Department to an area hospital and is listed in critical condition. The 17-year-old female passenger was uninjured. Once Herzog is medically cleared he will be booked into Sacramento County jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer in addition to his felony warrants.
