The Sacramento Police Department would like to inform the public of a scam that has occurred around the country and here in Sacramento.
Potential victims are receiving phone calls from people claiming to be law enforcement. These individuals usually have some of the victim’s personal information including, but not limited to, their address, phone number, date of birth and sometimes their Social Security numbers.
The suspect tells the victims that they have a warrant out for their arrest and unless they pay a fictitious fine over the phone, officers will be arriving at their house shortly to take them into custody.
Please remember that generally, law enforcement agencies do not collect fines over the phone. Ask to speak to a supervisor, hang up and call back to the agency that is requesting this payment to verify such claims.
Keep in mind that you are not obligated to provide any of your personal information over the phone to anyone. If you are concerned and feel that your information has been compromised, please call your local law enforcement agency. If you believe the call to be a scam, do not give any information to the person, note the phone number that the suspect is calling from and what agency the suspect is claiming to represent. That information will assist any investigation.
