The Sacramento Police and Public Works departments are encouraging motorists to plan ahead for this year’s Amgen Tour of California bicycle race, Sunday, May 11, especially in light of the ongoing Fix50 project.  Amgen chose Sacramento to host the start and finish of Stage 1 featuring the world’s most elite bicycle racing teams.

The 2014 Amgen Tour of California Opening Gala is set for Friday, May 9, at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.  The race begins at the State Capitol at 10:50 a.m., heads north out of the City limits and ends at the Capitol at approximately 3:30 p.m. http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/host-cities/city-sacramento

The event will entail multiple rolling road closures from the State Capitol along with extensive parking restrictions.

Downtown circuit street closures

To facilitate the set-up of the downtown circuit for both the Amgen Tour of California and the Lifestyle Festival, the following streets will be closed to traffic from 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, through 11 p.m. Sunday, May 11 : 10^th Street from N to L streets.

Beginning Saturday, May 10, at 7 a.m., traffic will be limited on L Street from 9^th to 15^th streets.  Also at that time, traffic on 12^th Street from J Street to L Street will be closed with exception; Sacramento Police will allow Hyatt traffic/patrons only.

Beginning Sunday, May 11, from approximately 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., the following street will be closed for finish line setup: L Street from 9^th to 15^th streets.   

The following streets represent the outbound race circuit.  They will be closed intermittently from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

·         West on L Street to 11^th

·         North on 9^th Street

·         West on F Street

·         North on 7^th Street

·         West on Richards Boulevard

·         North on Jibboom into Discovery Park

·         West on Garden Highway until city limits

The inbound race circuit will travel westbound on Folsom Boulevard and L Street into the Capital.  Folsom Boulevard will be experiencing rolling closures as the racers pass between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to traffic and those planning to cross Folsom during that time frame will experience delays.

Sacramento Police Department expects the above closures to last 20 to 30 minutes at each location.  Officers will allow vehicles and pedestrians to cross the route as long as the lead race vehicle has not yet reached that particular location.  Emergency vehicles will be allowed but local access will be limited.

On-street parking will be limited

Before and during the event, on-street parking downtown will be limited as approximately 600 on-street parking spaces will be posted “no-parking” until Sunday evening.  Vehicles parked in restricted areas will be towed at the owner’s expense. 

Beginning Thursday through Sunday at 11 p.m., parking will be prohibited on L Street, from 10th to 12th; 10th from N to K; L from 10th to 9th. On Sunday between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m., there will be no parking around the State Capitol and 26 additional blocks downtown.

Nearby garage parking will be available

Starting on Saturday at 2 p.m, until 11 p.m., Sunday, 10th Street between J and L streets will be converted from a one-way to a two-way street to facilitate parking at the Capitol Garage.

Due to the large number of spectators anticipated, the Department of Public Works also will have staff monitoring the occupancy of all City garages. As facilities near capacity, drivers will be directed to alternative parking garages. Parking Services highly recommends using the City Hall Garage at 10th and I streets, Memorial Garage at 14th and H streets, Old Sacramento Garage at 3rd and I streets, the Downtown Plaza West Garage at L and 3rd street, the Downtown Plaza East Garage with entrances on J and L streets and the Tower Bridge garage off Capitol. http://portal.cityofsacramento.org/~/media/Corporate/Images/Public-Works/Parking/Garage-and-Lot-Map.ashx
