On Friday, June 6, 2014, at approximately 4:34 p.m., officers responded to a report of an attempted bank robbery at the El Dorado Savings Bank in the 4700 block of J Street.
A 45-year-old male suspect entered the bank and passed a teller a note demanding cash. The note also threatened that the suspect would take hostages. Moments after he handed over the note, and prior to taking any money, the suspect fled the bank and drove off in a 4-door grey sedan parked just outside.
Officers rushed to the area and located the suspect’s car as it was entering onto westbound Highway 50 from Stockton Boulevard. With the help of witness descriptions, including the vehicle license plate, officers were able to quickly identify the suspect vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. The suspect immediately fled and actively evaded officers’ signals to stop. The suspect transitioned to eastbound Interstate Business 80 and reached speeds of 70 miles per hour while on the freeway.
Officers pursued the dangerous felon northbound onto 30th Street. For an unknown reason the suspect vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a large tree on the east side of the street. Paramedics were immediately summoned to the scene and the suspect was found to have sustained traumatic fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
No officers or members of the public were injured during this incident or were involved in the crash. The Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit responded to assist with the investigation.
The release of the suspect’s identification is pending notification of the next of kin and the completion of the coroner’s investigation.
