The Rainy Weather Season Is Upon Us

The rainy season is welcomed as it generates water for our agriculture and water sports but the wet weather also increases the risk of being involved in an accident.  The wet and slippery roads are unpredictable.  Because of these hazardous driving conditions, there's no better time to practice safe driving and ensure that your vehicle is properly equipped.  Here are few tips to ensure your safety during the rainy season.

Safe Driving Habits

·         Allow more time for travel - Plan to drive at a slower pace when the roads are wet.

·         Avoid using cruise control - If you hydroplane, there's a chance your car could actually accelerate.

·         Watch out for pedestrians - An ordinarily observant pedestrian may become distracted while handling umbrellas and other rain gear.

Wiper Blades

  • Efficient wiper blades keep your windshield clean and streak free so that your visibility is not compromised.
  • A good rule of thumb is to check your car wiper blades every time you get your oil changed.
  • Be sure to check windshield wiper fluid levels.

Lighting

·         Make sure all headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning properly so other drivers will see you during downpours.

·         Turn on headlights while driving in inclement weather.

·         It is a violation of the vehicle code to drive without headlights in inclement weather – 24400 (B) VC.

 Tires

·         Proper tire tread depth and inflation are imperative to maintaining good traction on wet roadways and it can prevent hydroplaning.

·         Take the penny test - Place a penny between the tread of your tires. Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head points down into the tread.  If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace the tire because your tread is no longer deep enough.
