On Friday, May 15, 2015, at approximately 5:31 p.m., uniformed officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of 61st Street regarding the report of a domestic disturbance. A nearby neighbor reported sounds of a disturbance involving a male and a female.
Officers arrived on scene and initially contacted the female subject just outside of the home.
The male suspect was located hiding inside of the residence and refused to comply with the officer’s commands. The 42-year-old suspect confronted the officer with a handgun, pointing the weapon toward the officer. Fearing for his safety and the safety of his partner, the officer was forced to discharge his duty weapon upon the suspect while retreating out the front door of the home.
The gun was later examined by detectives and discovered to be a black, semi-automatic style, BB gun, which was visually indistinguishable from a real handgun.
Shortly after the officers retreated to safety, the suspect exited the home and surrendered. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Homicide Detectives, Internal Affairs, and Crime Scene Investigation Units are investigating this incident in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability. Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
