Officer Involved Shooting

On Thursday, May 21, 2015, at approximately 6:13 p.m., Sacramento Police and Sacramento Fire personnel were in the 900 block of I Street investigating an unrelated report of two subjects fighting in Cesar Chavez Park.

As officers were preparing to leave the area from the previous incident, a vehicle arrived occupied by a mother and her adult son. Officers were near the south side of I Street, between 9th and 10th Streets, when the driver of the car walked up and summoned police assistance. The woman asked for help after feeling threatened by her son, taking the opportunity to hail emergency personnel on the side of the road.

The woman’s 28-year-old son also exited the vehicle and approached officers near the north side of the park. A bicycle officer and patrol supervisor initially made contact with the man, who produced a knife, and threatened officers. The suspect refused to comply with the officer’s commands to drop the weapon, as he advanced toward the officers with the knife.

Fearing for his safety and the safety of the other officers, the officer was forced to fire his duty weapon at the suspect, striking him multiple times.

Medical personnel were already in the area due to the previous call and quickly rendered medial aid. The suspect was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Homicide Detectives, Internal Affairs, and Crime Scene Investigation Units are investigating this incident in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability. Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
