The Sacramento Police Department is asking the community to be aware of suspicious subjects who may loiter for the purpose of robbery.
Over the past five years, the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) has investigated numerous reports of robberies throughout the city. Crime analysis has shown that a substantial number of these crimes occurred during the summer months from May to August, and during the weekend from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
The latest trends indicate that suspects are seeking items that are easily accessible and publicly displayed such as money and electronic devices.
This summer, as a crime prevention measure, SPD will be deploying additional law enforcement resources into communities. Officers will be working targeted enforcement focusing on robbery prevention and crime suppression.
Here are some tips to help you protect yourself and safeguard your summer:
· Be alert - Pay attention to people who behave suspiciously, i.e. someone who loiters in the area with no apparent purpose. Be particularly aware of a person you have seen loitering more than once.
· Be wary of people who may ask for directions, a cigarette, or to use a cell phone. Trust your instincts.
· Be aware of your surroundings when leaving an event. Avoid distractions and using electronic devices when walking alone. Traveling in groups is always the best option.
· Plan to meet at a safe location for the sale of any property or electronic devices. A police station open to the public is your best option.
· Avoid handling or counting money in public.
· Don't Resist. If a robber threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your property. Don't argue. Your life is more important than property.
· Activate GPS tracking applications on electronic devices to aid in property recovery and suspect apprehension.
· Report any suspicious activity or crime immediately to the police. Be prepared to provide suspect and vehicle descriptions, including license plates.
The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to any robbery or suspicious activity to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
