The Sacramento Police Department is asking the community to be aware of a scam involving possible burglary suspects impersonating utility employees.
In the past two weeks, the Sacramento Police Department has received two reports of suspects claiming to be utility employees. The impersonators knock on front doors advising they need access to the home to inspect gas lines.
In one incident, the resident allowed the purported utility worker inside of their home, leaving the man unattended. The suspect stole property from the residence before walking outside to an awaiting vehicle, fleeing the area.
During a second incident the homeowner was confronted by an unknown man in front of their home. The homeowner became suspicious of the subject after he claimed to be an employee of a utility company. The man fled on foot from the area after the resident refused to cooperate with him and the police were notified.
The Sacramento Police Department would like to remind you to be alert. Never allow subjects inside your residence or yard without proper identification. City workers or Utility workers are always identified by department issued badges. Please be aware that a subject who is wearing a hard hat or utility vest may not be a City or Utility Worker.
The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
