With summer ending and schools ramping up for fall, streets around city campuses are becoming increasing congested with cars, bicycles and pedestrians.

That’s why the Sacramento Police Department is joining forces with local school districts to remind drivers, bikers and walkers to exercise extreme caution during student drop-off and pick-up times.

"It is easy to get complacent, drive a little too fast, or get distracted by our phones and not think of the consequences of our actions,” said Chief of Police Sam Somers Jr. “Let’s challenge ourselves to be diligent and aware of our surroundings while driving, and work together to make our city safe for the kids getting to and from school every day." 

In the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) alone, some 43,000 students will return to classes at 76 schools on September 3. Many SCUSD campuses are located along high-traffic neighborhood streets – heightening the need for safe, slow driving.

“We are asking our families to give themselves ample time to get their children to school safely,” said SCUSD Superintendent José L. Banda. “Don’t wait until the bell is about to ring.”

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to obey traffic laws and follow common sense safety guidelines around campuses. Distracted driving such as texting or talking on the phone is not only illegal, but especially dangerous around schools, where hundreds of students may be on foot.

The Sacramento Police Department also urges the community to remember the following safety tips:

·         Always cross the street at a crosswalk, preferably at an intersection controlled by a traffic signal or stop sign.

·         Turn down the volume on headphones or ear buds and don’t text while walking.

·         Remember to “Wait for the Walk” green light for pedestrians, don’t risk crossing on a red just because there are no cars in sight

·         Look both ways while crossing. Walk, don't run.

·         Always try and get a visual commitment from the driver, before crossing, even when you have a green pedestrian signal or the right of way.

·         When biking, design your route around streets with clearly marked bike lanes, when possible.

·         Always wear a bike helmet.

·         Bike with the flow of traffic; walk against traffic.

·         Motorists should be prepared to slow down for children entering the roadway.

·         Use caution when sun glare may degrade a driver's vision.

·         Parents should plan their child's route if they walk or cycle to school (safety spots to seek help, best places to cross roadways, ensure child does not get lost).

·         Never walk alone at night.

·         Never ask for or accept a ride from stranger.
