For the past several years, the Sacramento Police Department has dedicated preventative measures and resources toward reducing automobile theft within the city of Sacramento. Continuing to plague our community, there were over 2,900 vehicles reported stolen in the city last year.
Recognizing that vehicle theft is often connected with violent crime, it is imperative we deploy strategies such as prevention, intervention and education to reduce this type of crime in our city.
The Police Department’s bait car program has been instrumental in the arrest of a number of offenders related to vehicle, property and violent crimes. Recently, the department upgraded the technology installed in each vehicle. These upgrades include improved GPS enabled tracking and enhanced camera technology.
A key component to the success of the program is to encourage the community to report thefts that have occurred. This ensures that the bait vehicles can be effectively and efficiently deployed. Bait vehicles are then deployed in undisclosed, random locations throughout the city of Sacramento, often in areas where there may be an uptick in reported auto thefts or other property crimes.
When a bait vehicle is stolen, officers are promptly alerted to the activation and respond to the area to apprehend the suspect.
As a part of the effort to reduce vehicle theft citywide, the Sacramento Police Department would like to provide the following tips to help you avoid becoming a victim:
· Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you are away from it.
· Always roll up the windows and lock the car, even if it is in front of your home.
· Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk or at least out of sight.
· Park in busy, well-lighted areas.
· Install a mechanical locking device that lock to the steering wheel, column, or brake to prevent the steering wheel from being turned.
· Invest in a security system if you live in a high-theft area or drive an automobile that is an attractive target for thieves.
· Call police immediately if your vehicle is stolen.
· Stolen vehicles are often used in the commission of other crimes. Quick action on your part may not only aid in the recovery of your vehicle, but may prevent its use for illegal purposes.
The Sacramento Police Department continues to implement crime prevention and deterrence strategies such as the bait car program. As an organization, we are committed more than ever to “Making Sacramento the Safest Big City in California.”
