The Sacramento Police Department has arrested 55-year-old Dennis Smith for attempted murder.

On Tuesday, March 2, 2016 at 2:04 a.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of Power Inn Road regarding two subjects who had been shot.  Upon arrival, officers located a male adult that had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body.  This victim was transported to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition.  Officers gained additional information that the victim’s girlfriend had also been shot but at the time, her whereabouts were unknown.

Officers searched the area for the female victim and within minutes they located her walking near Elder Creek Road and 75^th Street.  The victim was found to have major head trauma and was transported to a nearby hospital.  Once there, medical staff discovered that that female had sustained a gunshot wound to her head.  The female remains in critical but stable condition.      

Detectives from the Sacramento Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigators took over the investigation early that morning where they sought out witnesses and processed the scene for evidence. 

Through the course of the investigation, Dennis Smith (pictured) was quickly identified as the person responsible for the shootings.

On Wednesday, March 3, Smith was taken into custody near the 7200 block of Jerry Way by Sacramento Police detectives and members of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, Special Enforcement Detail.  Smith has since been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for attempted murder charges. 

A specific motive has not been determined and detectives believe the suspect was known to the victim.
