On Saturday, April 2, 2016, between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., members of the Sacramento Police Department will be educating the public about vehicle theft and implementing prevention strategies in several areas of North Sacramento.
Sacramento Police Auto Theft detectives, patrol officers, police cadets, VIPS and student trainees will be on foot in several apartment complexes in North and South Natomas distributing educational flyers and steering wheel locking devices.
The purpose of the operation is to educate, inform and prevent auto theft within our community, by targeting areas which have experienced an increase. Members of the police department will be out in the community engaging in dialogue and answering auto theft related questions.
Over the past few years, the Sacramento Police Department has successfully reduced the overall rate of motor vehicle theft in the city. Last year, we have seen a slight increase in auto theft related crimes where 1990s Honda Civics and Accords have been the most targeted vehicles.
To address this issue, we are working in partnership with the California Department of Motor Vehicles to identify and reach out to the registered owner of these vehicles with a letter from Chief Sam Somers Jr.. The letter provides recommendations on how to keep their vehicles safe. In addition, the department has strategically placed Police Observation Devices (PODS) within the community, equipped with License Plate Reader systems (LPR). This technology has and will continue to assist officers in recovering stolen vehicles and apprehend thieves who commit these crimes.
Tips on preventing your vehicle from being stolen:
• Never leave your car unattended with the engine running or the keys in the vehicle
• Use anti-theft devices such as “The Club” and/or a vehicle alarm
• Park in your garage or well-lit and highly visible areas whenever possible
• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle, but if you must, make sure the items aren’t visible
