On Friday, April 8, 2016, at 8:24 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to the 7600 block of Prescott Way regarding a suspicious subject walking door-to-door, peering into the windows of the homes in the area and jumping fences.
When uniformed officers arrived on scene, they contacted a man who matched the suspect description. The man was detained, un-handcuffed, in the back of a patrol vehicle while officers made contact with neighbors to determine if a crime had occurred. Moments later, the detained man began acting erratic by kicking the interior door of the patrol car and attempting to pull the cage bars off of the window. Officers opened the door to check the welfare of the man and he forcibly exited the car and fled on foot.
A foot pursuit ensued and the suspect began jumping fences into several backyards in an attempt to elude officers. The suspect jumped a fence into a residential backyard where he confronted a female resident. Scared, the resident fled inside her home and locked the sliding glass door. The suspect began banging on the glass door and ultimately forced entry into the home by breaking the glass door. Once inside, the suspect armed himself with two large kitchen knives and chased the victim out the front door of her home. A neighboring citizen heard the commotion and stepped outside his residence to see what was happening. The citizen was immediately confronted by the armed suspect who attempted to stab him several times. Both victims were able to escape without injuries.
As officers responded to the area, the suspect fled over another fence. Neighbors provided officers information as to where the suspect was hiding. Several patrol officers located the armed suspect hiding near a vehicle parked in a driveway on Center Parkway. Officers made verbal contact with the suspect and gave him multiple commands to drop his weapons. The armed suspect disregarded the commands and charged towards officers. Fearful for their lives and for the safety of community members, officers shot the suspect multiple times as the suspect charged at them with both knives in hand.
The Sacramento Fire Department responded to location and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during this incident. Homicide Detectives, Internal Affairs, and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to the scene to begin their Officer Involved Shooting protocol. This incident is being investigated in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability. Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
