The Sacramento Police Department is in the process of locating the owners of a number of bicycles that were recovered from a storage facility in north Sacramento.
On Friday, April 29, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., officers responded to the 3300 block of Northgate Boulevard to serve a search warrant involving stolen property being housed at a nearby storage facility. Upon service of the warrant, officers located over sixty bicycles inside the unit. All the bicycles were seized and booked for safekeeping at the department’s property division. A suspect has been arrested and the investigation remains very active. In an effort not to compromise the investigation or prosecution, the name of the suspect is not being released at this time.
The ultimate goal of this investigation is to reunite each bike with their rightful owner. To ensure that this occurs accurately and efficiently, we want to inform the public of the steps being taken to make this process successful.
· Investigators will compare all of the recovered bicycle serial numbers through the available stolen property databases to determine if they have been reported stolen or not.
· They will also compare photos received via email and social media to the seized bicycles. If a match occurs, an investigator will make contact with the reporting person to ensure the documentation is accurate and complete.
· Investigators will make contact with individuals who have made inquiries through the dedicated phone line as to how the owner’s will be reunited with their bicycles; or if any of bikes recovered belong to them.
· Next week, the bikes will once again be compared to the stolen bicycle databases to accommodate any late reporting efforts by the public.
If there is a confirmed match, an investigator will contact the reporting person and obtain their statement. Since the property is part of a criminal investigation, the victims will be notified when the lead investigator releases the property.
The Sacramento Police Department encourages anyone who believes their bicycle may have been recovered to file a police report and contact the dedicated phone line at (916) 808-6705. The best way of communication is via email at bikeunit@pd.cityofsacramento.org.
After a few weeks, when all other efforts are exhausted, the department will schedule a public viewing of the bikes. (TBD)
